One minute, a stream of ordinary words, and your real typing speed at the end of it. Not the speed you think you have — the one you get when a clock is running and you can feel yourself rushing.

The words are common and short on purpose. This measures typing, not spelling, so you should never be stuck wondering how a word is spelled while the seconds tick away.

Most people land between 30 and 50 words per minute. Anything above 70 and you are genuinely quick. Anything below 25 usually means you are looking at the keyboard, which is a fixable thing.

Common questions

How is words per minute calculated?: The standard way: every five correct characters counts as one word, scaled to a minute. It is done this way because words are different lengths, and counting actual words would make a run full of short words look faster than the same effort spent on long ones. Only correct characters count, so hammering the keyboard randomly will not produce a number.
Does a typo ruin my score?: It costs you, but not catastrophically. A wrong letter marks the word red and stops those characters counting toward your speed. You can backspace and fix it, and the fixed version counts normally. What actually hurts is not noticing — a word you leave wrong contributes nothing at all.
Can I do this on a phone?: You can, and the words are chosen to make it bearable: all lowercase, no punctuation, nothing that triggers autocorrect into a fight with you. Your number will be lower than on a real keyboard and that is expected rather than a flaw. Compare phone runs to phone runs.
Is the scoreboard shared with other people?: No. It is saved in your browser on this device and it goes nowhere else. Clear your browser data and it is gone. We would rather give you your own previous number to beat than invent a global ranking, because there is no server here to hold a real one.
Why are the words so boring?: Because interesting words are usually long and rare, and both of those measure something other than typing. The list is built from the most common words in ordinary writing, which is what you actually type most of the time anyway.

This measures one minute of typing on whatever keyboard you happen to be using right now. A laptop, a phone and a mechanical keyboard will give you three different numbers, and none of them is wrong. There is no global ranking here because there is no server keeping one — the scoreboard is saved on this device only.
